T2. 2016 Autumn Swiss

The 2016 Autumn Swiss tournament is in progress, completing this Friday, 18th March.
This is a five-round event, with a time limit of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds for each move played.

Round 1 (19th Feb)

The club welcomed new player Geoff Davis, who started off with a solid win against Owen Courtis. 2015 co-Champion Zoran Babic also commenced for 2016 with a win against Mio Ristic.

Round 2 (26th Feb)

Geoff Barber and Bill Stokie stepped into equal first place with solid draws against the reigning 2015 Club Champions.

Sugrue was fortunate to survive a crushing attack flowing from Barber’s MacCutcheon French Defence, see the game page for details.

Round 3 (4th Mar)

True to the Swiss System, the four tournament leaders locked horns in Round 3.
Geoff Barber gained material advantage over Bill Stokie, but Stokie’s active endgame play held the balance. Michael Sugrue defeated co-Champion Zoran Babic after a shaky start, to claim the outright lead with two rounds to play.

Round 4 (11th Mar)

Round 4 saw Geoff Barber move to equal first place, overcoming relentless pressure from Geoff Davis. Meanwhile Michael Sugrue was lucky to draw against Bill Stokie after blundering a pawn.

Round 5 (18th Mar)

Geoff Barber and Michael Sugrue both won in the final round to tie for first place on 4 points out of 5. A solid victory saw Bill Stokie complete the Tournament undefeated, to take outright third place on 3.5 points.
