2011 Geelong Open

Solo Wins In Geelong Open 2011

Stephen Solomon of Queensland (above, left), is the new Geelong Open Champion. He took the title from the previous holder, ex World U12 champion Bobby Cheng (above, right). Although Bobby actually defeated Stephen in their individual encounter, and equalled his score of 5/6, he lost the title to Stephen on countback.

The tournament was ably (as usual) arbited by Gary Bekker, who filed this report:

Bobby Cheng and Leonid Sandler took half-point byes in round 1, and drew their game in round 4, allowing Stephen Solomon to take the outright lead by defeating David Garner in the same round. In round 5 Bobby Cheng beat Stephen Solomon with the black pieces in 25 moves, and Leonid Sandler defeated Michael Sugrue, giving the three of them the joint lead going into the final round. Bobby Cheng defeated David Garner (who emigrated from the UK last year), and Stephen Solomon eventually ground out a win in a long tough ending, to jointly win the event. Jamie Kenmure and Benjamin Spencer both had excellent results to win the U/1600 and Junior prizes respectively. See games below.
